Meet the Summer Academy Educators

Erin Deppe

Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Summer Academy Co-Director

I am from Oakland City, Indiana and a graduate of Oakland City University with a Bachelors in Science in Social Studies Education.  This is my second year teaching at EDS and the year before, I worked at Fort Branch Community School as a Title I Aide in kindergarten and first grade.  My hobbies include:  reading, hiking, baking/cake decorating, and spending time with my family.  I am looking forward to teaching Summer Academy this year!

Carla Englebright

Pre Kindergarten Teacher

I have been in Early Childhood education for more than 10 years. I received my Bachelor in Science in Family Life and Child Development from the University of the Philippines, in 2000. I have worked in Private Catholic schools and progressive schools in the Philippines. I have been teaching Preschool at EDS for the past 8 years. The first year, I spent teaching in Pre K then then moved to JPK. After 2 years of teaching JPK, I had the opportunity to move to PreK where I have been for the past 5 years. I strongly believe that children learn best by hands on experience and play.

Alice Galbreath

Jr. Pre Kindergarten Teacher

Alice Galbreath has been working in the field of Early Childhood for over 15 years.  She has worked with infants through school age children.  Mrs. Galbreath earned her Master's degree in education from the University of Southern Indiana in 2008.  In 2010 she received the Becky Trela Creativity Award.


Katie Bockting

Jr. Pre Kindergarten Teacher

I have been in early childhood for six years. I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a bachelor degree in early childhood education and special education. I have taught in many different settings including faith based preschools, private schools, and public schools. I have been teaching junior prekindergarten at Evansville Day School for the past two years. I believe children learn best through hands on experiences and play.

Sarah Sutton

PS Innovation Library Coordinator and Upper School Cheer Coach

I graduated from Oakland City University in 2012 with a dual degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. I have been part if the EDS family for four years. I love learning and have had the privilege of expanding my teaching expertise in many different areas at the school including Library, Preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade, and Technology and Innovation. I was part of the Evansville Day School and NASA’s ARISS and Reduced Gravity Flight Programs. In my spare time I enjoy reading, spending time with my family and pets, and coaching the Upper School cheerleading team.


Karen Meacham

Pre Kindergarten Teacher

I have been in the field of ECE for more than 20 years. I have an undergraduate degree in Theatre Arts from Wake Forest University and a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I studied with Dr. Lillian Katz. I have worked at independent schools in Massachusetts, North Carolina and Indiana, a Head Start program, public schools, Catholic schools, and a Montessori school. I have also visited and studied a variety of schools that employ alternative teaching methods including The Project Approach, Montessori and Waldorf philosophies, and the teachings of forest schools. I have completed class instruction for both the Master Gardener and Master Naturalist of Indiana programs.

Kelly Phillipps

Kindergarten Teacher

I graduated from Indiana State University with a BA in Elementary Education and a Kindergarten Endorsement. After my time at ISU, I knew my passion for education and working with young children would be a life-long journey.
I began my career at Evansville Day School 16 years ago as a PreK teacher. I spent 4 years teaching in the PreK before moving to the 2nd grade classroom. After teaching 2nd grade for 7 years, I took the position as kindergarten teacher where I have been for the past 5 years.
My love of animals, nature, literature, and relationships play an important role in my teaching. I enjoy sharing my interests with my students, and I work to offer opportunities and experiences for children to discover their own passions.

Kelly Lashley

1st Grade Teacher

I attended the University of Southern Indiana where I received my BA in Elementary Education with a Mathematics minor.  I began my teaching career at Evansville Day School where I have been the first grade teacher for 6 years.  During my time teaching, I also returned to USI where I earned my Master’s Degree in Education.  I have a passion for learning and understanding the world around me, and I love to share that passion with my students.

Tia Rogers

2nd Grade Teacher

I graduated from Vincennes University with a BA in Elementary and Special Education. I knew early on in life that I wanted to be a teacher. Shortly after starting education classes at VU, I knew I had made the right decision.
I started working at Evansville Day School in 2012. I have been teaching second grade for three years, and I have learned something new each year. I am passionate about the taking care of the planet and animals, and helping kids navigate through social situations. I strive to bring my passions into my teaching. I truly enjoy my time with the kids, and look forward to teaching throughout Summer Academy.

Megan Collins

4th Grade Teacher

I am an Evansville-native and also an alum of Evansville Day School. I graduated from Franklin College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and continued my education at Indiana Wesleyan University where I earned a Master’s Degree in Education. After graduating four years ago, I was thrilled to return to EDS as the 4th grade teacher. I am passionate about travelling to new places, helping and playing with animals, and giving back to the community whenever I can.

Eric J. Sogard

5th Grade Teacher

B.A. in American Studies/Education University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)
M.S. Educational Leadership and Supervision, Hood College
I have taught in four different states (MD, NM, VA and IN) over 19 years. I enjoy working with children discovering new ideas in all subject areas highlighting discovery and hands on learning. My two children also attend EDS and I love the small classrooms and emphasis on individualized learning.

Amy Whetstone

Middle School Science Teacher

I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a BS Degree in Elementary Education and concentration in science. This is my third year of teaching. When I am not teaching, I like to be outdoors and spend time with friends and my cat, Selina.


Ashley Swinford

Upper School Science Teacher

I received my Bachelor in Science degree from the University of New England where I majored in Marine Biology and my Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I have experience working as a conservation educator for 5 years in facilities such as: The California Wolf Center, SeaWorld San Diego, and The Lehigh Valley Zoo. I am passionate about sharing my experiences with wildlife and conservation in the classroom. I have spent the past 2 years teaching secondary biological sciences.
