Are You Ready to Salsa?
Evansville Day School Hosts Annual Salsa Challenge

Evansville, IN - Join the Evansville Day School community on Friday, Feb. 23 at 10:45 a.m. to kick off the annual Salsa Challenge, a celebration of Latino culture through music, Salsa dancing, and salsa dips made by students.

As part of the Salsa Challenge, Primary, Middle, and Upper School students make at least six delicious salsas from fruit salsa to guacamole. Visitors to the Salsa Challenge are invited to sample and vote for their favorite. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to dance and celebrate the Latino culture. This year, the Upper School Choir will perform “Chili Caliente” and Middle School Spanish students will sing “Guacamole” and “Vivir mi Vida” in Spanish.

Evansville Day School Spanish teachers created Salsa Challenge as a hands-on, interdisciplinary and cross-divisional experience. Students work throughout the winter semester in their Spanish, art, music, science, and technology classes on different aspects of the Salsa Challenge.

During Spanish classes, students learned about fruits, vegetables, and Mexican meals while researching their salsa recipes. In technology, they learned how to create recipe books using typing, formatting, and designing electronic documents. Students learned the life cycle of fruits/plants/vegetables in science, and in art, they worked on design and decoration of posters for the event. To round out the event, students learned songs and dance steps in music.

To prepare for the Salsa Challenge, students put their math, cooking, and collaboration skills to work (in both Spanish and English) as they use their recipes to create their salsa in teams.

“This challenge is one of many examples of Evansville Day School’s unique educational experience that develops tomorrow’s local and global leaders,” said Spanish Teacher Anna Newton.  “As the area’s only independent school, our students and faculty have the flexibility to participate in opportunities that inspire balanced, resilient, globally minded, entrepreneurial learners who will be the innovators of the future.”

This event is made possible by the support from Friends of Evansville Day School, the school’s parent teacher association.
