Head of School Search
Dear Evansville Day School Community,
I am excited to begin my tenure as your new Head of School in this welcoming community. It is an honor to serve at a school with rich traditions, a strong sense of community, a dedicated faculty and staff, and such engaging students! As I was working on this letter, my daughter, Emily, called to tell me about her last week in Buffalo. I asked her if she was excited to finally be moving. She replied, “I’m not worried because I have two homes in Indiana: one is our house, and the other is Day School.”
I share Day School's focus on rigorous, student-centered academics balanced with supporting the needs of the whole child. EDS’s commitment “to strive for excellence in mind, body, and human spirit” frames the purpose, value, and nature of our program. This vision, along with a need to think strategically about facilities, curriculum alignment, faculty, and philanthropy, will require the commitment of all of us - students, families, teachers, staff, alumni, and the Board alike - to creative exploration, to partnership, and to open discussion. My task is to help this vibrant community identify our shared priorities and weave our past successes, current commitments, and future possibilities together.
I was drawn to Day School because the Mission explicitly defines this School as a partnership. I believe that communication, collaboration, and trust – the bedrock of partnership – are essential to student success. I urge each member of the Day School community to actively engage in the life of Day School. Follow our Facebook and Instagram accounts to learn about the amazing students, faculty, and alumni. Attend athletic games and school events, such as our Gnome Run in November and our Gala in April. Ensure that Day School can continue to provide the premier educational experience in the Tri-State area by donating to the Fund for Excellence.
The opening event of our 78th school year (and our 60th year of graduating seniors!) is Back-to-School Night on Monday, August 5th, from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. From 4:00-5:00, come drop off your school supplies, reconnect with friends, say hello to the teachers, and then hear the annual “State of the School” at 5 pm in Heekin Gymnasium. Afterward, we invite you to visit Azzip or Chipotle for a Giveback Event to support our PTO. I am very much looking forward to connecting with each of you and being a part of the Day School community in action.
From the window of my new office, I’ve been watching the Summer Academy students play, while I work with faculty to plan the start of this landmark school year. I know that Emily is right - we’ve found our home.
Warm Regards,
Sarah Jacobson
Head of School
