Day School Receives Reflex Math Grant

Evansville Day School students will have a unique opportunity to enhance their math experience, thanks to a grant from Reflex Math. Center for Academic Success (CAS) instructor Heather Migdon applied for the grant earlier this year, and Day School was selected from 4600 applicants. ExploreLearning’s Reflex is known as the world’s most effective (and fun!) program for helping students master their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. As part of the program, children in grades 2-5 have the opportunity to use Reflex, an online, game-based program that helps students build fast and effortless recall of math facts.

Research has shown that quick recall of math facts is critical for future success in mathematics. More advanced mathematical processes often require students to know a lot of math facts. So, it’s important to master these basic facts before tackling more challenging problems.

Reflex provides daily assessment of student progress, coaching on new facts, and practice with the games. The system is customized to adapt to the student’s level and progresses as their skills advance. Students will be using Reflex in class several days a week, for about 10-15 minutes at a time, making steady progress toward fluency. Since Reflex is online, students are also able to continue its use at home.

Day School is excited to have this new opportunity in our Center for Academic Success (CAS). This year, 50 students in grades 2-5 give up a recess period to attend CAS Math Club during lunch, which provides a math enrichment experience to any kid who wants to sign up. This is one of many ways Day School provides academic opportunities to challenge our students while creating balanced, resilient, globally minded, entrepreneurial learners.
