Day School Teacher accepted into Science Coaches Program

Upper School science teacher, Dr. Denise Hanes, was recently accepted into the Science Coaches program.  Science Coaches is a joint venture of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) providing an educational outreach initiative dedicated to enhancing science skills in students across the United States.  The program pairs chemists (coaches) with AACT teacher members in elementary, middle, and high schools. Coaches accepted into the program will have the opportunity to form a valuable relationship with a teacher by volunteering face-to-face (Science Coaches One-on-One) or through a digital forum (Science Coaches Teams).

Dr. Hanes has been paired with Liping Zhu, a Polymer Materials Scientist/Engineer at the University of Southern Indiana.  Denise and Liping will begin a series of six meetings held throughout the school year.  Ms. Zhu will lend her expertise by helping with Day School live lab demonstrations and experiments and helping Dr. Hanes create new and interesting lesson plans for Day School science students.  In addition to the expertise Liping will bring to the classroom, Dr. Hanes acceptance into the Science Coaches program earns Day School a $500 dona tion from ACS to use for purchase of lab equipment and classroom materials.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Hanes on this exciting partnership!
