Introducing Hogsmeade in Gingerbread

For the last three years, Upper School 3D art students have created a gingerbread wonderland during first semester. This annual tradition begins with students creating a cardboard mock-ups of their project, which are then used as guides to create baking molds for the walls and roofs of the actual gingerbread structures. Then for several weeks leading up to winter break, the hallways of Day School are filled with the spicy scent of gingerbread, as the students bake their creations.

Two years ago, the students designed and constructed "Edible Evansville" (pictured below), building gingerbread structures paying homage to local Evansville landmarks, including the Greyhound bus station, Willard library, and the Old Courthouse, to name a few.

Last year, the classes fashioned a festive display of Whoville (see below), complete with the town square, Mt. Crumpit, and, of course, the Grinch and his dog Max!

This year is no exception. The students, under the tutelage of teacher Leilani Moore, once again worked their "magic" and created a gingerbread masterpiece.  This year’s theme is Harry Potter, so visitors to the Traylor Atrium are greeted by a confectionary recreation of the town of Hogsmeade, including The Leaky Cauldron, Gringotts,Olivander’s Wand Shop, and even an edible Quidditch arena! If you are in the area, stop by and see this amazing display! Just be sure to steer clear of Diagon Alley!

Projects such as these are shining examples of students working collaboratively and excercising creativity and resilience. These are the skills the global leaders of tomorrow need!
