Congratulations to this year’s Global Language National Honor Society (GLNHS) officers at Evansville Day School: Max Lowery, Sarah Ballard, Sophie Meyers, and Eddie Vraney. Upper School Spanish Teacher Linda Huber says, “I am excited to see the enthusiasm and strong leadership in our Global Language National Honor Society members this year! All the current members have excelled academically, are involved in the community, and have a global perspective that makes them stand out among their peers. Our President, Max Lowery, also participated in the IU Honors Program in Spain last summer. These experiences promote cultural insight and passion for our global leaders of tomorrow. I am honored to lead such inspiring young people, and I look forward to working with them this year!”
The GLNHS is an honor society for high school students enrolled in a global language and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French and Spanish. The mission of the Global Language National Honor Society is to recognize high school achievement in global language and to promote interest in International Studies.
Any upper school student who has maintained an honor average in the study of a Global Language for a minimum of three semesters and is in level IV or higher and has plans to continue studying the language is eligible to be a member of the Global Language National Honor Society. Inductees must also exhibit character, leadership, cooperation, honesty, service and commitment to others.
In the spirit of their mission, nationally, the society contributes more than $150,000 in awards to student members annually. The most prestigious of the awards are college scholarships given to high school senior members and the Student Travel Awards given to high school junior members.
Through active participation, students strengthen ties to the community while building their cultural awareness in leading volunteer work and other civic endeavors. These are just a few ways in which members can bring pride to their school’s global language department in relevant and meaningful ways that reach out to the greater community.
